Michael James (MJ), Seattle's Scrum expert, was selected as a Scrum Trainer in 2006 by Scrum's original proponent, Ken Schwaber. Michael has helped countless organizations in many countries, garnering over one hundred written recommendations on his LinkedIn profile. He has created the world's most popular online learning resource for Scrum (http://ScrumTrainingSeries.com), the most successful illustrated distillation of Scrum's definition (http://ScrumReferenceCard.com), and the most quoted scope declarations of the Scrum Master role (http://ScrumMasterChecklist.org, referenced in books by at least four other Agile authors).

MJ is a software process mentor, team coach, and Scrum Trainer with skills in Product Ownership (business), Scrum Mastery (facilitation), and the development team engineering practices (TDD, refactoring, continuous integration, pair programming) that allow Scrum to work. Michael has been involved with LeSS (Large Scale Scrum) longer than anyone else on the West Coast of the United States. He is a recovering "software architect" with programming experience back to the late 1970s, including control systems for aircraft and spacecraft -- some of the most deterministic, high-quality systems ever built. If you have been an airline passenger, you have probably already used Michael's software. Michael's automated test experience predates the "eXtreme Programming" movement.

MJ teaches fewer public courses than other trainers because he is in high demand by private companies. He also teaches harder than average classes (and also more fun), with activities rather than lectures and slides.

MJ's Certified Scrum Master (CSM) Experience takes a more comprehensive, in-depth approach to CSM training for people who want to apply the Scrum principles to real world situations and explore how to avoid common mistakes other organizations have made. This workshop only accepts participants who are willing to prepare before class.

Michael James is Seattle's Scrum expert, author of the world's most popular Scrum e-learning series, as well as materials used by other trainers and translated by volunteers into twelve languages. Participants will need to complete the free online preparation work followed by an assessment to demonstrate their knowledge prior to registering for class. We do this because well-prepared groups are able to spend time exploring more advanced topics. The class is 90% activity, with very little lecture and PowerPoint. Unlike most trainers, MJ checks your knowledge during class to ensure you are prepared to take the ScrumAlliance's certification exam. MJ's class prepares you to explain Scrum to others when implementing it at work, and during job interviews.

------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------

This class will appeal to you if:

  • You are the type of person that has a natural curiosity for learning
  • You challenge yourself to be the best in whatever you do
  • You enjoy problem solving and are comfortable with ambiguity as you explore options in complex situations
  • You appreciate theory but learn best by doing
  • You are a job seeker wanting to be more knowledgeable about Agile during job interviews than an ordinary CSM
  • You are a consultant wanting more confidence in the guidance you deliver
  • You are a business leader seeking to avoid common mistakes in implementing Scrum

------------------------------------------------------------

This course is an unconventional learning experience using activities rather than long lectures.

Course topics include:

  • How Agile development differs from traditional project management.
  • Three Scrum roles, responsibilities, boundaries, in depth.
  • How to write well-formed Product Backlog Items, commonly referred to as user stories.
  • Techniques for splitting large requirements (e.g. epics) into small specific ones.
  • Product Backlog prioritization.
  • Effort estimation.
  • Maintaining the Sprint Backlog.
  • Five Scrum meetings (how to, how not to).
  • Sprint execution for self organizing teams.
  • Definition of done and the potentially-shippable product increment.
  • Environments that encourage or impede team self organization.
  • Small group dynamics (the psychology of innovative teams).
  • Modern Agile engineering practices including test-driven development (TDD).
  • Lean principles derived from the Toyota Production System.
  • Product Owner planning and forecasting beyond one Sprint.
  • Case studies of Scrum in large organizations and for large scale development.
  • Case studies of common organizational impediments.
  • Case studies of successful and unsuccessful attempts to introduce Scrum/Agile to organizations.

The class will also contain knowledge tests that precede the Scrum Alliance's online test.

"It was the best class I've attended in years."

Course Prerequisites:

Regardless of whether you have prior exposure to Scrum, this class has mandatory prerequisites, which include 6 entertaining e-learning modules with quizzes, followed by a self assessment to demonstrate your knowledge.

The award-winning free online preparation work at http://ScrumTrainingSeries.com must be completed in order to register for this class. Absorbing the vocabulary and basics of Scrum before the classroom activities helps ensure the best team learning experience for all participants. Once you've completed the modules, we will send you a self assessment to measure your understanding of the preparation work. If you have any difficulty with the modules or embedded quizzes, please contact us for assistance.

Here’s what people are saying about the preparation work:

I wish to express my thanks for your online scrum training videos. They succeed in introducing the concepts of scrum, without being too complicated for a beginner to understand.

--Josh at Ericsson

I watched the Intro to Scrum video and it just made pure sense. I took the test as well and loved it, everything sank in first time around.

--Rich in Holden, MA

This series is FANTASTIC! It was entertaining, engaging and informative. I’m very new to SCRUM and this material was presented in a very logical, easy to understand manner. It’s such a logical framework and approach! In fact, I sent the link to all the PMs in my company (we’re implementing this approach to SDLC).

--Donna in Nashville, TN

------------------------------------------------------------

On successful completion of the course, you’ll receive

  • Qualification for ScrumMaster Certification (passing the classroom and in person exams are required for certification)
  • Payment of your first two year dues for the Scrum Alliance

------------------------------------------------------------

"I passed the CSM test on the first try without the need for subsequent review."

------------------------------------------------------------

Interactive instructional methods

During class, CSM participants explore Agility while divided into self organizing Scrum teams of 5-7 people each, working with case studies and experiencing learning situations beyond the Scrum Alliance's certification requirements.

The case study method of learning has been used in business, law and medical education for many years. Case studies are valuable for not only teaching the concepts and content around Agile, but also the process skills and critical thinking required for implementing Scrum successfully in a real world work environment.

The case examples used will often involve complex situations that require participants to learn to problem solve. Having to apply concepts to practical situations can help participants synthesize information more quickly. In addition, the case studies used in class usually generate enthusiastic class discussions that enhance the learning experience for all.

Notes:

After completing the application (registration of participants), we will send you a guidance email (zip file attached).

If you do not receive it 10 days before the training, please contact "contact-ja AT odd-e.com".

This course is a certification course, so you will be evaluated by the trainer and also need to pass the online test to be certified. This means just attending the course is not good enough.

You will need to demonstrate to the trainer you are qualified during the course and pass the online test after the course. Please understand that if trainer can’t see your effort during the course, it is hard to give you qualification to move forward to take online test. Thank you.

If you are late for the course (or if you leave the training early), you won’t be able to be certified. No recording is allowed. If you violate the rules by using PC or mobile recording devices, you won’t be able to be certified.

If you cancel or change the date from 10 days before the start of the training, you will need to pay a cancellation fee .However, you can change the registered participant until the day before training. Please edit from "My Course".

After training, it will take approximately two weeks to deliver emails to certified candidates. Please note that it may extend in the case of a busy season.

If you are not certified, you will not be notified of the results. Only successful candidates (candidates eligible for certification) will receive an email from the Scrum Alliance.

Testimonials

I attended one of Michael's CSM classes in 2013. I was pleasantly surprised how Michael chose to approach the content. Instead of rehashing the same old material on scrum (which you can easily read by yourself elsewhere), Michael's class provided a unique and refreshing approach to the subject - it was based on *experiencing* key concepts of scrum (e.g. self-organization) rather than *discussing* them in an abstract sense. This class is truly awesome especially if you have experience with scrum and know the basics already. You will not only easily pass the CSM test, you will also actually get some additional insight, and be challenged to rethink some of your preconceptions. Overall. I found the class inspiring and it exceeded my expectations.

-- Anna Barlow, Software Program Manager at Hewlett-Packard

Michael led a highly interactive Scrum certification training class in Boston where I was an engaged participant. Michael not only impressed our entire class with his expertise in Scrum methodology but his personable yet efficient style of teaching helped me to successfully pass the Scrum certification test on first attempt. Any class led by Michael, will guarantee thought provoking, relevant, and well communicated methodology subject matter. I cannot recommend him as a trainer enough!

-- Nicole Scaramuzzi Courtemanche, Director of Marketing at NIC Inc.

I had the pleasure of attending a CSM course run by Michael and found him to be a thoughtful and knowledgable instructor, keenly attentive to his audience and inventively weaving in examples of time boxing, negotiation, and other techniques as part of the instruction, so that he is also teaching by example. Even though I have been doing agile development for several years his course was still both fun and useful.

-- David Marteinson, Principal at domineur inc.
